Clean Monday (Greek: Καθαρά Δευτέρα), also known as Pure Monday, Ash Monday,Monday of Lent or Green Monday, is the first day of the Eastern Orthodox Christian and Eastern Catholic Great Lent. It is a movable feast that occurs at the beginning of the 7th week before Orthodox Easter Sunday.
Clean Monday is a public holiday in Greece, where it is celebrated with outdoor excursions, picnics and the widespread custom of flying kites.
"Saturday night on a Greek island.
In the middle just above the water and with the bright light coming from the door, is our pharmacy. Two levels up, and you'll see a quite large building with green windows. That's the old markets, which this year are being renovated to their former glory. On the left side, again near the water, you'll see two cars. Those are our taxis, and the group of men chatting nearby are the drivers. The orange glow to the right, again near the water is the Platia Café. No doubt cosy, and serving up drinks around this time."
